Time Traveling is technically cheating, but people still exploit it to get ahead in the game. You can change the date and time to manipulate what Bugs and Fish are available, make Bells by appreciating your bank deposits over the new year lapse (You recieve interest returns in your bank account), or skip ahead to force house expansions. You can change the time and date in your town on the New Leaf main menu screen before you enter your village. Make sure there are empty flea-market spaces, though. They will begin replacing their furniture with the shells and their furniture will appear at re-tail for purchase. If a neighbor of yours has a piece of furniture you want, you can get it by sending them seashells. Visit the Post Office and choose "Ask about a present" at the counter. (You may also need to disable your regular connection-just add or remove a letter in the old SSID). Use the SSID above and, if necessary, your wifi password.
If you'd like to shake trees in peace without the worry of a volatile swarm of bees chasing you and leaving you with a swollen eye after being stung with a terrible wrenching metalic sound, simply open your town's gate. Kapp'n will stop singing, admonish your impatience and then take you directly to the island. You can skip Kapp'n's long song on the way to the Tropical Island by tapping the touch screen repeatedly or hitting the B button.
